Just a little theory I came up with. It sounds kind of ranty doesn't it... .3. oh well~ xD
I know that alot of people think she's actually Doctor Princess, and I admit that the two do have alot in commen. But I just think that would be too simple for her to be such a side character. :3

This picture blew. My. Mind....
Princess Bubblegum is actually Betty. She got mutated from the radiation of the great mushroom war, somehow gained imortality (not the kind that makes you impervious, the kind that makes you not age, cause she obviously wasnt impervious to being killed in Mortal Folly). Maybe she found an artifact like the ice kings crown, similar in the way it gave him imortality. Maybe its her tiara, or the gem in it. From the Mortal Folly episode its obvious that the gem in her crown is magical and powerful since it protects her from the lich.
Since its been a thousand years she has since changed her name, perhaps to deal with the drastic change in her current life from her old one as Betty. But they both start with B, Betty--Bonnible.
Plus, they have very similar hair and body shaping and are both scientists. Betty has very pink skin as well. This could be a little hint from the animators...
She doesnt recognize the ice king as her long lost love Simon cause well, who would? What with his complete change in both apearence and personality.
It would also explain why Ice King is so in love with PB, even if he doesn't know why.
And PB's non-aging condition may also explain why she refuses to date finn, it would only lead to heartbreak later on and she would know that.
It also gives depth to the fact that her and marceline have a past together (hinted at in What Was Missing). They are both stuck at the age of 18-21 and have been alive for 1000 years.
Also, throughout the series, at least two years have past, as Finn used to be 12 at the begining and is now 14, but she hasn't seemed to age. Plus she was the same age as she is now when Baby Snaps was a small child, as seen in Princess Cookie.
Princess Bubblegum has been shown many times to know exactly how to create candy people (such as Goliad, You Made Me, and All your fault) and if, as Betty, she was already exeirimenting with making candy people when the radiation reached her, it could have mixed with what she was doing in her lab and caused her to become a candy person as well. This would explain why she's the only known humanoid candy person, and why she loves the candy people so much, not to mention why she rules over them.
How's that for a crazy plot twist~? Princess Bubblegum is actually Betty, the ice kings long lost love.

I know that there is a picture of PB with what apears to be her mother/grandmother in one episode. I have three thoughts about this.
1- it was there before the creators thought of Ice King's back-story, since this picture appeared in an early episode in the series, and it has been proven that the creators did not come up with it until later on.
2- who's to say that Bonnie didn't create a mother/grandmother figure for herself, since all of her family would have died in the war?
3- who's to say that they are related at all? It could just be an elderly ruler from somewhere elts that PB is/was attached to.
